Due to the numerous upcoming construction measures at Frankfurt Airport, FRAPORT AG decided in 2017 to coordinate the construction logistics for the northern operating area.
Given its size and continuous operations, Frankfurt Airport is a particularly complex and lively system. On the one hand, the necessary construction measures ensure the constantly necessary further development of the infrastructure, but on the other hand they also have an impact on flight operations.
In particular, the construction measures in connection with the connection of the new Terminal 3 to the northern area of the airport are the focus of the Coordinated Construction Logistics project. Each individual construction project has specific construction logistics requirements (space requirements, traffic routing) that need to be taken into account. This includes the planning, control and realisation of construction measures.
In order to develop Frankfurt Airport in line with demand, it was recognised that in view of the large number of construction projects and to ensure a permanently functional infrastructure, overarching coordination of construction logistics planning and measures is necessary.
The Coordinated Construction Logistics project was launched in order to obtain an overview of current and future projects and to coordinate their requirements for the overall structure and ongoing operation of the airport.
As a first step, an inventory was carried out. Based on this, areas (hotspots) with a particular accumulation of projects and conflicts were identified. Working groups were set up for these hotspots as part of a regular communication process. The aim of these groups is to identify existing and future conflicts with the help of the project and operational managers and to develop joint solutions through consultation.
The starting point was the establishment of a suitable project organisation. In addition, processes were designed that provide a framework for regulated coordination. In addition, tools were developed that serve as a basis for coordination and decision-making. These include a graphical and tabular overview of the measures taking place.
PROPROJEKT has been supporting the project since the beginning. Following the conception of the project and the organisation and development of the working tools, the project was transferred to ‘regular operation’ in 2018. PROPROJEKT oversaw the regular operation of the project in the period 2018-2024 as the responsible and implementing project manager. The majority of the construction measures to connect Terminal 3 to the northern area of the airport have already been successfully implemented together. The project will be completed on schedule in 2025 with the completion of a new station at Terminal 1 for the driverless passenger transport system.
