Reaching the first milestones! Two years ahead of the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics World Games 2023 in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, a very positive intermediate conclusion for the work of the organising committee was made at the third meeting of the World Games Committee. An update on the current state of preparations was given to all those present by Christiane Krajewski, President of Special Olympics Germany and Sven Albrecht, CEO of the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. In line with the special Olympics motto of athletes, for athletes, Special Olympics athletes Dennis Mellentin and Mark Solomeyer provided additional information of the involvement of athletes in all areas of planning.
The World Games Committee includes, among others, the Federal Ministers Horst Seehofer (Federal Ministry of Interior, Building and Community) and Hubertus Heil (Federal Minsitry of Labour and Social Affairs), Alfons Hörmann and Friedhelm Julius Beucher (Presidents of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the National Paralympic Committee Germany) as well as Olympic champions Katharina Witt and Frank Busemann, silver medallist in the decathlon at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Sports Senator Andreas Geisel attended the meeting as representative of the host city.
After two hours of digital meeting, Dagmar Freitag, Chair of the sports committee of the German Bundestag, summed up the meeting as “Very professional and an example for the organisers of major sporting events”.
PROPROJEKT has been supporting the senate chancellery of Berlin and Special Olympics Germany since the bidding phase and has been continuing this collaboration with the organising committee since spring 2020. For the first time ever, the Special Olympics World Games will be held in Germany – in Berlin in June 2023
