SOWG Berlin 2023: Pos­it­ive inter­me­di­ate con­clu­sion of the World Games Com­mit­tee

Reach­ing the first mile­stones! Two years ahead of the open­ing cere­mony for the Spe­cial Olympics World Games 2023 in Ber­lin’s Olympic Sta­dium, a very pos­it­ive inter­me­di­ate con­clu­sion for the work of the organ­ising com­mit­tee was made at the third meet­ing of the World Games Com­mit­tee. An update on the cur­rent state of pre­par­a­tions was given to all those present by Chris­ti­ane Kra­jew­ski, Pres­id­ent of Spe­cial Olympics Ger­many and Sven Albrecht, CEO of the Spe­cial Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. In line with the spe­cial Olympics motto of ath­letes, for ath­letes, Spe­cial Olympics ath­letes Dennis Mel­lentin and Mark Solomeyer provided addi­tional inform­a­tion of the involve­ment of ath­letes in all areas of plan­ning.

The World Games Com­mit­tee includes, among others, the Fed­eral Min­is­ters Horst See­hofer (Fed­eral Min­istry of Interior, Build­ing and Com­munity) and Hubertus Heil (Fed­eral Min­sitry of Labour and Social Affairs), Alfons Hör­mann and Fried­helm Julius Beucher (Pres­id­ents of the German Olympic Sports Con­fed­er­a­tion (DOSB) and the National Para­lympic Com­mit­tee Ger­many) as well as Olympic cham­pi­ons Kath­ar­ina Witt and Frank Buse­mann, silver medal­list in the dec­ath­lon at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Sports Sen­ator Andreas Geisel atten­ded the meet­ing as rep­res­ent­at­ive of the host city.

After two hours of digital meet­ing, Dagmar Freitag, Chair of the sports com­mit­tee of the German Bundestag, summed up the meet­ing as “Very pro­fes­sional and an example for the organ­isers of major sport­ing events”.

PRO­PRO­JEKT has been sup­port­ing the senate chan­cellery of Berlin and Spe­cial Olympics Ger­many since the bid­ding phase and has been con­tinu­ing this col­lab­or­a­tion with the organ­ising com­mit­tee since spring 2020. For the first time ever, the Spe­cial Olympics World Games will be held in Ger­many – in Berlin in June 2023
