Realisation Study Ruhr Games 2015

After several preliminary studies (e.g. Major Sport in the Ruhr Metropolis, 1,5 MB, ger.), on February 29th 2012, the Ruhr Parliament awarded a contract to develop a planning and implementation concept for the Ruhr Games 2015/2016. The principal objective is to develop a unique regional sports format with a European context and to establish the Ruhr Games as a recurring event. As a festival of sports, culture and youth exchange for twelve to eighteen year old teenagers, the Ruhr Games are intended to boost regional identity and to promote a new image for the Ruhr Metropolis.

PROPROJEKT was assigned with CARDIAC Communication Ltd. to develop the planning and implementation concept. Here, the strategic framework combines Olympic sports with modern trend and action sports in order to bring together high performance sports and mass sports and to encourage the integration of various groups of young people. To enhance the spirit of the Games, industrial monuments will be used to hold the athletic contests along with established sports facilities. Further, to continuously involve the whole metropolitan area, a modular spatial concept for the timeframe 2015 to 2021 was developed. The project was realised in close collaboration with the RVR and the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

On December 13th 2013, the Ruhr Parliament unanimously approved the proposed concept and recommended its implementation.
