Operational project management — IHF Women's Handball World Championship 2025
The German Handball Federation (DHB) will host numerous international tournaments in the decade from 2023 to 2032, from the U21 World Championship 2023 to the double European Championship for men and women in 2032. This sequence of tournaments has been declared the Decade of Handball by the DHB and is embedded in a strategic concept that aims to sustainably increase the relevance of handball in Germany.
In order to promote the most efficient and sustainable implementation of the tournaments and to continuously optimise its own processes in the management of events, the DHB has commissioned PROPROJEKT to support the further development of operational tournament project management as part of the Women's World Cup 2025.
From a sporting perspective and in terms of the development of women's handball, the 2025 World Championship tournament was a resounding success for the DHB. Supported by fans in sold-out arenas in Stuttgart (preliminary round) and Dortmund (main round and quarterfinals), the German women's handball team played their way to the Final Four in Rotterdam. After defeating the defending champions from France in the semifinals, the German team lost by the narrowest of margins to Norway in the final, but was able to establish itself among the world's elite by winning the silver medal.
Accompanied by the "Hands up for more" campaign, the World Cup in Germany developed into the hoped-for handball festival. Never before had so many fans flocked to a women's handball tournament. The 32 teams played their matches at five venues in Germany and the Netherlands and a total of almost 355,000 fans attended the 108 matches, setting a new attendance record for a Women's Handball World Cup.
In addition to the direct optimisation of communication and reporting processes for the Women's World Cup itself, it is also intended to lay the foundation for processes during subsequent international events in Germany, in particular the Men's World Cup 2027.
In the months leading up to the event, PROPROJEKT advised the DHB's International Events team on the analysis and revision of existing processes and the selection of additional measures for operational tournament management. During the tournament, PROPROJEKT supported the DHB by collecting and processing daily feedback from the various venues.
