Since their promotion in 2020, the basketball team Niners Chemnitz has become a flagship of the city’s sporting landscape. However, their current venue, the Chemnitz Arena, is increasingly reaching its limits – particularly when balancing professional sports with multifunctional use.

In response, the City of Chemnitz commissioned the planning office AS+P Albert Speer + Partner, together with PPOPROJEKT, CSIGHT and KOHNEN, to develop perspectives for a modern multifunctional arena in the city center. The goal is to develop a forward-looking concept for a multifunctional arena that, beyond professional basketball, will generate cultural and economic momentum for the city center.

As part of a comprehensive stakeholder management process, the needs of various user groups were systematically analysed, site potentials evaluated, and technical feasibility assessed. Based on these findings, an initial functional design was developed – supplemented by a preliminary analysis of infrastructure requirements, an initial cost estimate, and a preliminary assessment of the economic viability.

The result: a well-founded concept with development potential. The findings were presented to the city in mid-May 2025 and will now inform the City Council’s decision-making process. The vision: a vibrant hub for sports, culture, and community – right in the heart of Chemnitz.
