The 19th Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy took place under the title ‘Act together, act faster, think further: shaping cities for everyone’ at the Palladium in Cologne and other venues.
The event was organised by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), in cooperation with the Conference of Building Ministers of the Federal States, the German Association of Cities and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities. PROPROJEKT and Büro Kaufmann supported the BMWSB in coordinating the content of the programme for the main plenary session, the six ‘Future Arenas’ with field trips, and the 17 specialist forums.
Over the course of three days, around 1,100 participants explored key future-oriented issues in integrated urban development and exchanged views on approaches to making cities fit for the future through joint action, accelerated processes and forward-looking planning.
The debates focused in particular on local authorities’ capacity to act in the face of climate adaptation, housing shortages, tight budgets and complex planning and approval processes. It became clear that sustainable urban development can only succeed through a combination of faster planning processes, effective planning, local authorities’ capacity to act, and close cooperation between the federal government, the states and local authorities.
We would like to thank all those involved for the productive exchange of ideas and are already looking forward to the 20th anniversary of the Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy next year in Chemnitz.
